A Lawyer Resigns Mid-Investigation, and the Regulators Go Quiet

Under Quebec professional discipline law, cooperating with an investigation by the Bureau du syndic is an ethical obligation. On 5 February 2025, Me David Chun resigned from the Barreau du Québec while one was under way. No public sanction followed. The Bar’s own insurance fund then retained and paid counsel to defend the firm concerned — counsel who went on to send cease-and-desist letters to journalists covering the story. A complaint to Quebec’s financial regulator has been acknowledged, and nothing else.

What becomes of a disciplinary investigation when the lawyer under investigation resigns from the order? In the Spunt & Carin file, the answer appears to be: nothing. A civil action alleging fraud and judicial collusion, contradictory sworn statements about a central witness, cease-and-desist letters to journalists, and a report from one of Quebec’s best-known family law practitioners — and the Bureau du syndic still maintains the closure. At that point the question stops being individual.

Where Is David? The Contradictions in the Spunt & Carin File

He resigned from the Barreau du Québec on 5 February 2025, in the middle of a disciplinary investigation. Since then, two accounts of his whereabouts have been placed before two different judicial bodies. Counsel retained by the Bar’s insurance fund place him in China, which would make his testimony impossible to obtain. A paralegal at his former firm swears she saw him at a Walmart in Kirkland on 11 October 2025, photographs attached. One of these accounts is false. No body has ruled on which — and a criminal file has already closed for want of evidence.

We Want to Hear From Former Clients of Me David Chun, Formerly of Spunt & Carin

Four people now say they were harmed by Me David Chun, formerly of the Westmount firm Spunt & Carin — the lawyer whom his own counsel placed in China. The material we have received since leads us to doubt that account. He resigned from the Barreau du Québec on 5 February 2025, while a disciplinary investigation was under way. A file is open at the Office des professions du Québec. We are looking for other witnesses, and you can come forward anonymously.
